Challenge: To reverse, what market research disclosed, to be a weakness in the relationship between America’s most experienced tour operator to Italy and the nation's travel agencies. After years of emphasizing consumer pull-through at the cost of industry promotions, a disappointingly small number of travel agents surveyed cited Perillo as their preferred tour operator to Italy.
Response: We developed and implemented an innovative program that rewarded both the travel agency and the booking agent for increasing their sales of Perillo tours. Direct mail, tradeshow promotions, internet and print advertising were used to recruit both agents and agencies to the “Perillo Perks” program. Pre-established annual sales targets and bonus commissions were used as incentives for the travel agencies, and individual agents were rewarded with e-mailed electronic "scratch-off" prize tickets for every tour they booked. After the first 18 months, more than 10% of U.S. travel agencies and agents were participating in the program. This led to an increase in Perillo sales of 15%.
